Suzuki NMEA 2000 SMIS Connectors by Model Year
This Suzuki NMEA cable + tee is manufactured by Suzuki. Their part numbers are as follows:
- Model Year 1999 to 2012 = Suzuki part numbers: 990C0-88149-294.
- Model Year 2013 to Now = Suzuki part numbers: 990C0-88149-357.
- Model Year 2016 to Now (Lowrance Only) Version = Suzuki part numbers: 990C0-88171.
2013 to Now Model Years
All Suzuki Outboards from 2013 to now will have two 4 pin SMIS connectors. These are usually located in the bow port quadrant. One will typically be connected to your helm cable harness. The other/unused one will be covered in a black or grey silicon cover that has a retaining strap/ring on the wiring coming into it. These connectors are what we call a 2 x 2 configuration. The connections are arranged in two rows of two connections each, similar to the 4 on dice.
Both of these 4 pin connectors are essentially identical. So, using one or the other with this cable is fine. But there is an ever so slight difference in how they are wired. In the vast majority of installations, it is perfectly fine to just use the spare connector. But, in extremely rare instances, you must move your existing helm wiring harness to the spare. Then plug the Suzuki NMEA 2000 cable into the connector that was previously connected to the helm wiring harness. We have only ever seen a handful of installations requiring this. So, it should only be done as a last resort if you can’t get your installation working.
About half the time, your outboard will need our Better Connected™ Suzuki SMIS to SDS Adapter Cable
The way to tell is to look at this photo:

If your outboard has the 4 pin connector in this photo, you do NOT need to order the extra SMIS to SDS cable in your order. If you have the opposite gender, you will require the extra SMIS to SDS adapter cable.
When your boat is not nearby, we offer the option to return an unopened SMIS to SDS adapter cable should you decide to add one to your order. You may return it unopened for a full refund if it is not needed for your installation. You simply have to pay the shipping cost back to us. Any shipping method with a tracking number is fine.
2016 to Now Model Years (Optional for Lowrance Fish Finder Owners Only)
There is another option available for owners of 2016 to Now model Suzuki Outboards who also are running Lowrance fish finders.
It is important to mention that this option does not provide any additional outboard engine data. But it does simplify the installation of your NMEA 2000 network, and some customers prefer the display on their fish finders that this option enables. If you use this more expensive cable, a Suzuki icon will automatically appear on your fish finder menus. You simply press that icon to get your engine display with all the data on the correct gauge.
It is also worth mentioning that if you are running twin or more outboards, you only need one of the outboards to have this cable present. You can outfit the rest of the outboards with the standard Suzuki 2013 to Now NMEA 2000 cable.
One of these cables is also all you need regardless of the number of fish finders you have.
Here is what your Lowrance fish finder will display if you install this version of this cable:

2008 to 2012 Model Years
All Suzuki Outboards from 2008 to 2012 will have two 4 pin SMIS connectors. These are usually located in the bow port quadrant. One connector will go to your helm cable harness. You will find the second one covered in a black or grey silicon rubber cap with a retaining loop. These connectors are what we call a 2 x 2 configuration. Look for a connector with two rows of pins, and two pins in each row. The pattern is identical to a 4 on dice.
Both of these 4 pin connectors are essentially identical. So, using one or the other with this cable is fine. However, there is a very slight difference in how they are wired. What if your boat is not nearby? That’s fine. Keep the SMIS to SDS adapter cable in the original packaging unless you need it. You can return it unopened for a full refund. We only ask you pay the shipping cost back to us. Any shipping method with a tracking number is fine.
1999 to 2007 Model Years
If you own a Suzuki Outboard made from 1999 to 2007, you have a round 8 pin connector inside your outboard that has 8 pin locations. You will need our Better Connected™ Suzuki NMEA 2000 2007 & Earlier Adapter Cable to adapt this connection to our Suzuki 1999 to 2012 NMEA Cable + Tee.
Look for a grey or black silicon rubber protector cap on this connector. The protector cap will have a retaining loop on it.
Once you remove the protective cover, your connector will look like this:

If your Suzuki outboard is in the 2003 to 2007 model year range, we need to let you know that there is a small chance that the fuel usage data the system displays will be incorrect. This known problem occurs in about 10% of our customers installations with models in this date range. 90% of the customers who have installed these systems see the correct fuel consumption data. All customers in this year range see the rest of the engine information correctly. Suzuki no longer makes this earlier model cable.
In about 10% of our installs for these years, fuel consumption is not correct after your installation, and fuel consumption is a critical parameter, you will have to install a third party NMEA fuel monitor. Garmin and Maretron both make products to do this.
TRIM (All Years)
ALL Suzuki Outboards have the same TRIM connection. This is a two pin connector that has a black wire and a white wire with a yellow “tracer”, which is a tiny yellow line that runs the length of the wire. Suzuki appears to find some sinister joy in burying this connection deep under the engine. Lots of customers have had issues trying to locate it. In some instances, customers have had luck following the trailer trim switch cable harness back up into the engine compartment. Often, your trim connection will run to the helm, even if there is not trim gauge on your console.
All Golden Channels products come with our “Now You’re Golden” guarantee. We promise you a working installation. Period. Or your money back.
These cables come with the standard Suzuki one year manufacturers warranty.
Installation Resources
Here is our video on how to install one of our NMEA Cable Bundles:
Some Basic Suzuki Tips
If you are running twin outboards (or more) it is important to get your new NMEA network completely working with one outboard first. So, leave the cable installation for the second and additional outboards after you have the first one connected and working.
In extremely rare instances, your electronics may not recognize multiple outboards. In this case, a mechanic with access to the Suzuki Diagnostic Software will have to set a parameter in each engine called NMEA Engine Instance. If they are not aware of how to do this, please contact us, and we will email instructions.
Remember that if you are a catamaran owner, you need to have a regular NMEA cable to bridge the distance between the two out board Suzuki NMEA cables. This can vary significantly, depending on the layout of the catamaran hull.
